MID CENTURY MODERN FRENCH BRONZE CAR AUTOMOBILE MASCOT HOOD ORNAMENT

MID CENTURY MODERN FRENCH BRONZE CAR AUTOMOBILE MASCOT HOOD ORNAMENT

This beautifully made antique bronze bird is artist signed "M. Burton" who was known for making bronzes in the early to mid 1900s.  It is also marked "Made in France"  and bears the posh retailer's name "Nil Melior New York" who's shop was located inside the landmark hotel, Waldorf Astoria, on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. This retailer described themselves as being exclusive motor car accessories headquarters. This finally made bronze was in good company with French R. Lalique crystal.automobile mascots and so much more in the exclusive retail showroom for New York's wealthiest visitors in the age of the automobile. Stylistically, this bird would fit very nicely in an Art Deco collection and also in a mid century modern setting. During the 1930s and 40s these two styles often overlapped. This bronze bird has a small track on either side that would slip into a rail on top of a car hood as a unique hood ornament chosen by the owner of the car rather than the car manufacturer. Very unusual! Very hard to find! Excellent condition. Measures 4 1/4 inches tall.

ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER 1885 RUSSIA CANDLESTICKS CANDLE HOLDERS

We just acquired these fabulous antique sterling silver Russian candlesticks from a descendent of the original family who purchased them before the turn of the 19th century!
The beauty and quality of these candleholders echo a bygone era when craftsman were artists and time was taken to make wonderful heirloom quality pieces.
These candlesticks feature three-dimensional grape vines and beautiful leafy repoussé designs.
They were made in 1885 and clearly bear the silversmith's hallmark of Teodor Warner and Sons who lived in Minsk.
They were made in the Victorian age which was transitioning to Art Nouveau. Elements of both styles can be found within these beauties.  The assayer's mark is of Josef Sosnkowski whose office was in Warsaw/Bapwasa. These are 124 years old and in surprisingly good condition standing tall and straight at 11 1/2 inches. There are small dings around the top edges and perhaps elsewhere that are well hidden within the ornamentation. These candlesticks exude old world charm and would be a magnificent addition on a well appointed dining room table!

ANTIQUE PORCELAIN COVERED WAGON CHINA DOLL, CIVIL WAR LETTER

Newly acquired from a local retired resident… This antique doll comes with an original letter dated 1862, which was during the Civil War, gifting the doll to a cousin since the owner was now too old to play with her doll.
It was written from Oswego, New York to her cousin whom she had never met in Cazenovia, New York.
Part of the letter reads… "I used to play with when I was a girl. I kept it very choice and now as my doll days are over to return no more, I give it to Cousin Garrie.
This auction includes the doll, the letter and it's envelope and an additional piece of paper with the history of the family, included as well.
The gift in 1862 was for the doll head only which was put on a Civil War era body after receiving it. Realize that during the 1850s and 60s toys were very scarce. They were loved and passed down from generation to generation as special treasured items.  Unlike today's disposable society, toys were mended and reused.
This brown eyed, porcelain head doll measures approximately 16 inches tall. The pants and petticoat are original to the Civil War era body. The breast plate was not originally attached to the head and the kid hands have been replaced.
The face is beautifully painted with long eyebrows, red lips and rosy cheeks. Her hair is parted down the middle. She is obviously American in style although these early porcelain head dolls were often made in Germany who where leaders in the doll industry. What we are offering in this auction is a hard-to-find antique doll with an impeccable history/provenance.
