MID CENTURY MODERN FRENCH BRONZE CAR AUTOMOBILE MASCOT HOOD ORNAMENT

MID CENTURY MODERN FRENCH BRONZE CAR AUTOMOBILE MASCOT HOOD ORNAMENT

This beautifully made antique bronze bird is artist signed "M. Burton" who was known for making bronzes in the early to mid 1900s.  It is also marked "Made in France"  and bears the posh retailer's name "Nil Melior New York" who's shop was located inside the landmark hotel, Waldorf Astoria, on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. This retailer described themselves as being exclusive motor car accessories headquarters. This finally made bronze was in good company with French R. Lalique crystal.automobile mascots and so much more in the exclusive retail showroom for New York's wealthiest visitors in the age of the automobile. Stylistically, this bird would fit very nicely in an Art Deco collection and also in a mid century modern setting. During the 1930s and 40s these two styles often overlapped. This bronze bird has a small track on either side that would slip into a rail on top of a car hood as a unique hood ornament chosen by the owner of the car rather than the car manufacturer. Very unusual! Very hard to find! Excellent condition. Measures 4 1/4 inches tall.
